WEEKEND IN CHEVIOT

Michael, myself, Heath and Oscar went to Cheviot for the weekend, early May.

We are making the most of camping, and exploring our own Canterbury within a two hour (maximum) radius!

So, Cheviot was the chosen  town!

Cheviot is a tired, quiet, 50's style country 'village'.

The camp ground was very tired indeed... (very cheap) and we LOVED it!
Rustic charm...

First morning, off to the village for breakfast ~ the boys saw this man with his BMW, so there was plenty of time for a good old chat and a look over it!

Isn't it the sweetest!!

(I wonder how many years this has been there!)

After breakfast at a REALLY nice cafe, we went exploring!

We found our way to Gore Bay.

Then there was a narrow road down to Port Robinson

What is Port Robinson all about??
In 1897 it was Cheviot's vital link to the outside world!

Here is the old track.. not used now by the public..

But not far away was another entrance!
It looked very 'private' but we figured we could take the trail down to the beach?

We made it down there!
It was very lonely and windswept, with lots and lots of beach flotsam and jetsam!

In other words, driftwood of all amazing shares and sizes;
kelp which came in the shape of face masks (reminds me of the WW2 gas masks!)
and washed up kelp which was like the intestines of a whale!

The mask...

which was then used as a ball for a few hits with a driftwood bat...

and Mike stands by patiently
-as fathers do-

ah yes, the whales intestines..

Mike taught the boys how to make bouncy balls out of kelp!

The beach play started off peacefully enough..

but boys have competitive spirits!
So to keep a stick standing through a breaker, became more and more daring...

Mother gave advice...

But they didn't seem to want it!
Best I got out of the way of the shenanigans and leave them to it!

Oscar got his stick set up

Then Heath...

Whoops!

Time to leave.
Towels on the back seat for the boys to sit on!!

Here we go now ~

Gorgeous back country scenery

We stopped and let the boys out.
They ran across the bridge and up the hill...

The Hurunui Mouth
where the river runs into the Pacific Ocean

Jet boat came at the right moment!

We took about 30 photos trying to get this hawk...
but he wasn't in a photogenic mood...and kept flying away ....(I think Mike drove up and down the road 5 times!!)   so this faded looking pic will have to suffice!

Made it to the Domett Railway Station Cafe for afternoon tea.

It was moved from down the road and done up as a cafe - very genuine and true to it's origins inside:)

This chap came to greet us!

Inside

And outside in their lovely gardens...
It seems they deem it worth having an original toilet from the railway station on display

Thanks! Yes, it is huge fun exploring. I mean, we have been to all these places (or some of them) but to stay and explore them a while - and do it with the kids eyes and minds - is awesome! :)
